CCTV, Closed Circuit TeleVision, is a television system that does not broadcast pictures for public viewing but instead images are available to a restricted number of monitors and recording equipment.
Modern CCTV cameras are compact, low energy & typically use CCD or CMOS image sensors to produce the video. Video images are normally transmitted over CCTV 75 Ohm coaxial or standard networking CAT5e cables. Other transmission systems include fibre optic, microwave, radio as well as TCIP networking.
Images are more often recorded direct to hard disk using a DVR (Digital Video Recorder), these can either be specifically manufactured for the purpose or a software based solution running on a Windows or Linux based CCTV server.
CCTV is installed for a number of reasons but primarily for crime reduction and detection. Vision Networks are keen to promote the Public Safety uses for CCTV, in town centre, ports, public spaces and buildings.
Whatever your needs for CCTV, schemes need to be registered with the local data protection officer and suitable CCTV warning signage needs to be in place to identify the scheme, its purpose and the owner/operator.
The latest generation CCTV can provide full HD images and is fully digital. The camera images are transmitted over a computer network and multiple cameras can be sent over the same cabling. The image quality can be far higher than conventional traditional analogue CCTV and quality is maintained throughout the system right through to the final recorded images. Analogue CCTV images are compressed and converted to digital during the recording process and depending on the method (algorithm) used image quality of the recorded video can be lower than the live images.
HD CCTV can require large data bandwidths typically 4 Mbit for high quality Full HD CCTV. Correct system design is important to make sure appropriate network bandwidth is available.
HD CCTV also requires larger storage to retain images for the same periods as analogue systems; this is typically 30 days for a commercially owned system used for the prevention and detection of crime.
